Simple Sweet Chili Sauce Recipe

This is a simple recipe on how to make sweet chili sauce for all the hot sauce lovers. You can use this recipe in meat dishes as part of the cooking ingredients or as a dip for your mini bites and it only takes 20 minutes to put everything together.

You can add or reduce the number of chili peppers in this recipe to meet your  own chili preference. We love chili and this one was extra spicy (🔥🔥) such that we downed our meal with a glass of water!

I’ve never used ordinary white vinegar in the making of this recipe but I think Apple Cider Vinegar would be a good substitute to rice vinegar.

Remember to either wash your hands immediately you cut up the chili peppers or use gloves to chop them up or you’ll end up with inflamed eyes. Please note that your kitchen will have the chili heat in the air, so, work in a well ventilated workspace.

You can store this chili sauce in the fridge for 3 days and up to 3 month in your freezer. 

This is a small batch and you can double or triple the recipe to make larger quantities.

What You Need:

  1. Pestle and Mortar
  2. 4-5 red and green chili peppers 
  3. 1 Large Garlic clove
  4. 1 cup Sugar
  5. 1 cup rice vinegar
How To Make It:

  1. Crush three chili peppers and garlic together in the pestle and mortar into a paste.
  2. Chop the remaining chili peppers into thin circular slices. You can remove the seeds for a less spicy sauce.
  3. In a small pan (sufuria), add the vinegar and sugar together and place the sufuria on medium heat. Too much heat will burn the sugar.
  4. Stir the syrup till the sugar dissolves and starts to slightly boil.
  5. Add the chili-garlic paste into the syrup and continue stirring.
  6. Add the slices of chili and cook for a few minutes until they’re tender.
  7. Add a pinch of salt to taste.
  8. Remove from heat and wait for the sweet chili sauce to cool before storing it in a jar. You can also use it immediately in my sweet chili matumbo recipe or with your chopped vegetables as a dip.
